Intense pulsed light (also called IPL) works with high-energy xenon lamps integrated in a handpiece. The xenon lamp emits “white light”, i.e. a broadband of all wavelengths. The “white light” wavelengths are cut by means of filters (filter glass, water filters). For each indication, a different spectrum of wavelengths is needed according to the starting frequency of the specific wavelength. For example, for permanent hair removal the spectrum of 540-570-650-780 (SHR-Superhairremoval) (according to the skin type) – 950 nm (nanometers) is the optimum range. The most recent pulsed light systems are equipped with intelligent, precisely dosed beam profiles with AFT and EDF technology. The scientific and very precise graph below shows exactly where a target (melanin, haemoglobin, water) is absorbed. The absorption curve of water increases at a wavelength of 980 nm. Absorption in water leads to additional heat, redness and pain without increase in efficiency. For this reason, the broadband spectrum of Laserwelt applicators is cut at 950 nm by a professional water filter. The xenon pulsed light lamp is surrounded by water (H²O) and emits light out of water. Water is a natural filter for all infrared wavelengths starting from 950 nm and of course cannot wear out, whereas exchangeable prism filters without a water filter firstly wear out and secondly the user recognizes the wear when patients complain about more side effects. The filter system of the Harmony system are integrated under vacuum in a laboratory to assure the highest standard of precision and efficiency and reproducible results.
