Terms & definitions around laser treatments

    • Salt bond
    • cross-linking inside the hair keratin due to amino acids of opposite
    • electrical charge, contributing to the stability of the hair
    • Sebaceous gland
    • holocrine gland; its cells are self-destroying and secrete sebum to the
    • skin surface
    • Seborrhoea
    • increased production of sebum
    • Seborrhoeic zone
    • so-called t-zone (chin, nose, front) and chest and back
    • Sebostasis
    • dry skin due to a low production of sebum
    • Sebum
    • secretion of sebum glands
    • Secretion
    • emitting of liquids, e.g. from skin glands
    • Skin fields
    • the distribution of fields is individual. Hair follicles are located at
    • the crossing points.
    • Skin furrow
  • ·         Skin Rejuvenation
skin refreshing, skin smoothing. The collagen production of the skin reduces during the years, and the first small signs of age appear. Wrinkles, dark circles around the eyes which make the eyes look tired and a greyish skin colour are visible signs. By means of selective photo thermolysis, the HARMONY yellow applicator for skin rejuvenation induces the production of new deep collagen fibres. Wrinkles are smoothed, and an increase in the tissue’s blood flow and oxygen supply are achieved. The area to be treated is heated up to 60° C for milliseconds by the specific LEO technology. There should be no simultaneous cooling during this treatment. Photos after laser skin rejuvenation.

  • ·         Skin Resurfacing
the very smooth laser beam of the erbium laser is also called the “cold beam” due to its low thermal shrinking effect. It removes the upper epidermis by means of very short, high-energy laser impulses. Uneven skin areas or hypertrophic scars are flattened to the normal skin level. Pigment deposits are removed superficially and completely. After the treatment, the upper skin layers are regenerated and a new smooth skin grows. In comparison to other methods of skin ablation such as micro-dermabrasion with grinders and mechanical or chemical peels, the big advantage of this smooth skin resurfacing is the pre-defined and thus controllable ablation of skin layers in several steps. A visible improvement in the skin with very low down-time for patients is the result. Photos after laser skin resurfacing.

    • Skin types according to Fitzpatrick
    • Fitzpatrick divides all skin types (colours) into 6 groups. Skin type I
    • shows very fair skin, while skin type VI is dark-coloured (e.g. African
    • nationality).
    • Sodium hydroxide
    • strong base, see alkaline
    • Spectrum
    • line of different colours from red to violet formed by the refraction of
    • white light emitted through a glass prism
    • Spectrum colour
    • pure, unmixed colours of different wavelengths, formed by the refraction
    • of white light; cannot be divided further
    • Spider Naevi
    • inside the skin, lat. naevus araneus; small blood vessels visible as a
    • network on the skin surface. Spider naevi are newly formed arteries with
    • tiny new vessels (teleangiectasia) starting from a central vessel. The
    • most common method of removing spider naevi is by means of laser or pulsed
    • light or even a combination of both techniques. Preventive measures are
    • avoidance of sun and major temperature changes. Slightly warm compresses
    • with horsetail, horse-chestnut or arnica strengthen the tissue. Cooling
    • gels containing mint, eucalyptus or camphor help to reduce the vessels.
    • Spindle cells
    • cortex cells of the hair fibres which look like spindles during their
    • growth period
    • Spreading
    • distribution of sebum on large areas of the skin
    • Stabilising effect
    • inducing a permanent stable condition
    • Sterol
    • hydrocarbon compound, to be found in every animal or plant cell
    • Stratum corneum
    • outer cell layer consisting of 10-12 separate cell layers; a healthy
    • stratum corneum is important for a healthy skin
    • Stratum corneum barrier
    • located between stratum corneum and stratum granulosum; protects the skin
    • against external influences (chemicals, bacteria, fungi, viruses) and
    • water loss
    • Stratum granulosum
    • granular layer, consisting of one or more cell layers with visible dark
    • granula which change into keratin
  • ·         Stratum spinosum
layer composed of several layers of cells in which the keratinocytes become larger and flatten out in the upper skin layers. The cells are connected to each other via bridges, which is why they are called spine cells.

  • ·         Stretch marks
Stretch marks (striae) are subcutaneous tears. The most common locations are stomach and hips, but also the chest. In the early stage, stretch marks are bluish-red, later on they are yellowy-white. Stretch marks look like scars. Stretch marks can result from periods of hormone turbulences (puberty, pregnancy, hormone diseases, hormone therapy) or from mechanical strain on the skin during fast and excessive weight increase. • Subcutis
    • fat layer of the skin
    • Subjective
    • not objective, partial
    • Sulfide bond
    • see disulfide bond
    • Sulphuric acid
    • strong acid of sulphide, hydrogen and oxygen; its compounds with metals
    • (salt) are called sulphates
    • Sweat gland
