    • Acid

  • ·         Acne
excessive sebum production and abnormal keratinisation block the sebaceous glands and lead to comedones and acne. Inflamed pimples result from the existence of the bacteria (propionibacteria acnes and staphylococcus epidermidis) living on the sebum. There are two kinds of comedones, open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads) as well as acne papules and pustules (inflamed comedones). Furthermore, superficial acne is distinguished from deep acne with inflamed lumps lying deep under the skin. See more on acne and possible laser treatment of acne.

  • ·         Age spots
small brownish age spots (lentigo senilis or lentigo solaris) are a benign skin alteration. They are the result of excessive pigmentation in the epidermis. Extensive UV exposure of the skin and thus a higher degree of free radicals lead to this cell damage.

  • ·         Age spots in general
along with birthmarks or freckles, common age spots (medically named lentigo senilis or lentigo solaris) are hyperpigmentation of the skin. They are benign but quite often a cosmetic problem. Areas of the body which especially suffer exposure to the sun, such as the hands, lower arms, face and décolleté are affected. Further causes are fair skin, sunburn or substantial exposure to the sun (even without sunburn). Dependent on the degree of sun exposure, age spots can occur as early as the age of 40. In Germany, 90% of 60 year olds are affected. In contrast to freckles, age spots are always visible. Age spots are slight damage to the skin as a result of extensive UV-light exposure. They are an accumulation of the brownish and wax-like pigment lipofuscin which results from the oxidation of the unsaturated fatty acids of the cell membranes. Lipofuscin is also called ageing or wear-and-tear pigment. The skin cells in particular are exposed to the free radicals caused by UV light.
